History

The company was established in 1956…
It was our founder who had the insight that the collagen in hides is a resource for organic nitrogen fertilizers. Ours is one of the oldest companies in this market. Our half-a-century of history proves that ILSA’s products have always been able to fit in the market, and that ILSA has been able to meet the demanding and ever more specialized needs of the agricultural market with innovation....

Since 1972 Ilsa has been the largest Italian producer of organic fertilizers...
Thanks to the takeover of ICO SPA and VALCOA SPA, Ilsa consolidated its position among the top Italian producers of organic fertilizers. At this time, Ilsa launched is best-known product, Fertorganico, which is still produced today...

In 1976 Ilsa made the strategic choice to increase the importance of research...
Cooperation initiated with the Faculty of Agriculture of the Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore of Piacenza set the base for the later evolution of ILSA research. Over time, cooperation expanded to involve numerous universities and research institutes in Italy and abroad. Today, ILSA has thirty-six active cooperations that have allowed us to consistently improve our production techniques and, most of all, to create new highly efficient products...

In 1993 the enzyme hydrolysis line was started-up...
The line used for the production of liquid fertilizers is the company’s signature of their entry in this market. It is a further confirmation of Ilsa’s vocation for quality, innovation and respect for the environment. In fact, the line benefits from enzyme activity as they react with the complex molecules that are the natural raw materials, transforming them into simple molecules, becoming soil nutrients that are immediately available and particularly suitable. After this came the development of organic liquids for foliar nutrition, bio-stimulants and resistance enhancers that promote the ability for internal reaction of the plants, increase their absorbency efficiency, and reinforce them in order to respond to stressful situation caused, for example, by drought, cold, or diseases. Research activities in this area provided the objective for the production of products capable of fertilizing during irrigation using limited quantities of water, thus facing the growing problem of lack of water resources...

In 2005 the company's research centre was inaugurated...
More than 30 years of working in close contact with major research institutes led to the creation of the company’s own research centre, equipped with grow rooms and the most modern equipment that emphasize once again, as if still necessary, the belief of the company in the innovation of traditional and organic farming. In this modern building, new liquid and solid products are created, characterized on a chemical level, and evaluated for the agricultural value. Solid products are subject to laboratory controls of the nitrogen mineralization curves, and to quantitative and qualitative analysis of bacterial communities. Furthermore, in-depth agronomical tests of the products are performed in both greenhouses (microcosms) and in field tests at experimental farms. Liquids are analyzed in environmental chambers to evaluate their biomass, morphometric parameters, and the chlorophyll in order to reach final agronomical tests in greenhouses and fields. The development of a new product requires on average 3 years. In addition to research, the laboratory is used for the daily inspection of the company’s production, which must guarantee to its customers the absolute quality standards of the company. The company’s vocation can also be seen by the fact that Italian and European institutions have financed some of the most interesting research projects. The results of research were not only converted into sales activities, but also published for the scientific community, which allows us to say that today Ilsa is among the stakeholders that contribute to learning more about the environment we live in...

In 2007 the company presents hydrolyzed gelatin for agricultural use to the market
This gelatin, called AGROGEL®, is the product of an exclusive ILSA process. It features the controlled release of nitrogen and high water retention capacity. It also stimulates the microbe flora in the soil and is compatible and mixable with other nutrients. Its excellent degree of standardization is without compare. It is the solid proof of the company’s efforts for process improvement and innovation in order to manufacture more efficient products that are closer to the real needs of ever more demanding and specialized agriculture...

In 2009, the Ilsa Brasil plant opens in Brazil...;
The new ILSA plant was opened in the Rio Grande Do Sul, a highly agricultural area with a large supply of raw materials. The reduction in availability of hides in Italy put the company’s sales at risk to not meet the growing demand for the product generated by more than fifty years of not only production, but continuous research, innovation, and communication that contributed to the foundation of high credibility and brand strength...
