Women in science: research, intuition and the future in ILSA laboratories

On the occasion of the International Day of Women and Girls in Science, ILSA celebrates the daily contribution of four female scientists from its Research & Development laboratory, whose work combines technological innovation, sustainability and an interdisciplinary vision.

Every day, through advanced technologies and cutting-edge research processes, ILSA’s researchers study new raw materials – including those of plant origin – to develop state-of-the-art fertilizers, plant nutrition solutions and biostimulants.

From these materials, often originating as by-products of other production processes, the ILSA laboratory is able to identify high-value active principles and biocomponents, capable of generating tangible benefits across the agricultural, industrial and scientific sectors.

The value of intuition and thinking outside the box

Intuition, determination and the ability to think outside the box are fundamental qualities in scientific research, and women have a valuable contribution to offer in this respect,” explain the ILSA researchers.

In conversations with them, a shared reflection also emerges: one of the reasons why relatively few girls still approach scientific subjects today is a sense of apprehension towards mathematics, often perceived as complex and inaccessible.

When mathematics becomes a tool

On this point, Stefania Lupinelli, ILSA R&D Manager, explains:

When you understand how mathematics is useful in scientific research, you begin to truly grasp its mechanisms. At that point, it becomes simple, immediate, almost intuitive: a fundamental tool for giving shape to ideas.

This message is further reinforced by the experience of Ilaria Tabarelli and Francesca Lorenzi, both members of the team with a background in language studies:

We didn’t follow a strongly scientific academic path, yet today we work in a laboratory. This shows that there is no single route, and that passion and curiosity can take you far.

Finally, Ilaria Tabarelli, Head of Laboratory Management Systems at ILSA, addresses a direct message to younger generations: “Don’t be intimidated by the idea of a scientific career. Doing research is wonderful: it’s a stimulating job, full of discovery, and it brings great satisfaction” meanwhile, Noemi Jaele Cattazzo encourages them by saying: “To the girls who dream of science, I say: believe in your abilities, pursue what you are passionate about, and don’t let anyone tell you that you can’t make it.”

A message to the girls of the future

In the photo accompanying this story, the four scientists smile in front of a whiteboard displaying a complex mathematical equation. A clear symbol: mathematics may seem difficult, but it should never be a barrier. With time and experience, it becomes a powerful tool – one that opens new perspectives and transforms curiosity into innovation. For ILSA, supporting research also means valuing female talent in science, encouraging new generations to believe in their abilities and to pursue their ambitions without hesitation.
